Yahoo Launches Mobile Game Studio

March 7th, 2005

With its acquisition of Stadeon, Yahoo officially launched into the mobile gaming market, a market that industry analysts estimate to be about $2 billion worldwide in 2005, a small but fast-growing part of the overall $20 billion gaming market.

Yahoo will compete with players such as the recently public Jamdat Mobile Inc. and private company such as Sorrent, In-Fusio and Mforma. The initial focus of Yahoo Mobile Gaming is likely to be emerging markets in China and other Asia countries where owning and using a cell phone comes earlier than a PC for most people.

Yahoo’s mobile move continues its strategy of becoming the top media giant in a digital age, where people spent time to consume information and entertain themselves. Whereas for Google, a move in this direction seems un-natural.
