Samsung Unveils Speech-to-Text Mobile Phone

January 12th, 2005

Samsung Electronics unveils “world’s first” speech-to-text mobile phone. This news was first reported on Jan 6 but escaped my attention. I think this is going to be a big deal. And every mobile phone maker should equip their phones with this capability. One can imagine that 3G mobile phones with this voice driven interface (and camera) will propell the adoption of text messaging, mobile internet and all sorts of mobile applications: mobile sales force automation, mobile real estate agent, mobile claim adjuster, mobile field inspection etc.

AFP reports: South Korea ‘s Samsung Electronics Co., one of the world’s top electronics companies, has developed the world’s first mobile phone with the capability to convert spoken words into text messages.

This “revolutionary” speech-to-text VoiceMode capability, available on two new Samsung phones, will allow users to speak into the phone and have the phone convert those words directly into text, it said.

Using a related system dubbed QuickPhrase, users will also be able to send pre-programmed short messages such as “Call me” or “Will call you later” by simply speaking those words.
